Dear Parents and Carers,

To mark International Mother Tongue Day on 21 February 2026, St Cuthbert’s is delighted to invite all families to take part in two exciting activities as part of the North East Festival of Languages.

St Cuthbert’s has a wonderfully diverse school community, which we are incredibly proud of. These activities are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the many languages, cultures and traditions that make up our school community, and we would love to see as many families take part as possible.

We are encouraging families to work together on one or both of the following two activities:

1. Mother Tongue Other Tongue Poetry

Families are invited to submit a poem written in their home language. This can include any language, including English.

More information can be found here:

2. World Recipe Book

Families are also invited to submit a favourite recipe written in their own language. This may include Geordie or English recipes, as well as recipes from other cultures and languages.

More information can be found here:

All children are encouraged to take part, and we would love to see as many different languages represented as possible.

How to submit:

  • Paper copies can be handed in at school

  • Digital submissions can be emailed to Mr Bright at Year2@stcuthbertsk.org

  • Deadline for all submissions: Friday 20 March

Submissions will be celebrated in a school assembly in March and may also be included in the Festival’s annual prizes and in the books they publish.

If your family would like to take part but needs any resources or support, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Bright (Year2@stcuthbertsk.org) and we will be happy to help.

Thank you for supporting this wonderful opportunity to celebrate language, culture and creativity within our school community. We look forward to seeing your fantastic entries.

Kind regards,

Mr Bright
