Summary of Statutory Assessments 2016 onwards
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
In EYFS, children are assessed against the Early Learning Goals (ELGs) at the end of Reception to establish if they have achieved a Good Level of Development (GLD).
Children will be defined as having achieved a Good Level of Development if they achieve at least the expected level in:
- The early learning goals in the three prime areas of learning (communication and language; physical development; and personal, social and emotional development)
- The early learning goals in the specific areas of mathematics and literacy
Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

The phonics screening check is a short, simple assessment to make sure that all pupils have learned phonic decoding to an appropriate standard by the age of 6. All Year 1 pupils in maintained schools, academies and free schools must complete the check.

The phonics check will help teachers identify the children who need extra help so they can receive the support they need to improve their reading skills. These children will then be able to retake the check in year 2.

The check comprises a list of 40 words and non-words which the child will read one-to-one with a teacher. Children are assessed individually by the class teacher and a mark is awarded for each correct word that is read. Children are then described as Working At the correct level for Year 1 or Working Below the level for Year 1.
Assessment at the end of Key Stage 1 (KS1) using scaled scores 2016 onwards
Children are assessed in the areas of Reading, Writing and Maths at the end of KS1 through the use of tests provided by the Department for Education and through teacher assessment using our own Step Assessment system. (Children are also tested in Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling but this test was annulled for 2015-2016 due to leaked test papers.)
Once the tests are completed, each child will be given a scaled score as a number for each subject area. This is based on his/her raw score, that is, the number of marks they achieve in each of the tests.
Children may achieve a score of:
- Below 100, meaning they have not achieved the ‘expected standard’
- 100, meaning that they have reached the ‘expected standard’
- Above 100, meaning that they have exceeded the ‘expected standard’

For children in Year 2 taking the Key Stage (KS) 1 tests, scores will range from 85 to 115. A child who reaches the expected standard (100 or above) is considered to be ready for the next stage of their education. |
Assessment at the end of Key Stage 2 (KS2) using scaled scores 2016 onwards
Children are assessed in the areas of Reading, Writing, Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling and Mathematics at the end of KS2 through the use of tests provided by the Department for Education and through teacher assessment using our own Step Assessment system. This document reports the school’s test results.
